The final of the 6th edition of the architectural and urban planning competition was held at the Presidential Palace on 13 October 2021. Eight awards and two distinctions in seven categories out of 40 submitted objects in this year’s “Accessibility Leader 2021” competition – these are the results of the deliberations of the Competition’s Chapter. It was organised for the sixth time by the Friends of Integration Association together with the Polish Town Planners’ Association, under the honorary patronage of the President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda. On 13 October during a gala ceremony at the Presidential Palace he presented the winners with their awards.
The “Accessibility Leader” competition primarily promotes the idea of universal design, i.e. providing comfort and safety to all users of buildings or spaces, including people with special needs. Two equal prizes were also awarded in the Office and Commercial Building category: the Nowy Targ office building in Wrocław of our design, and the Varso Place complex in Warsaw (designed by HRA Architekci).
The authors of our project were awarded for ‘creating a building that is a living part of the city and its inhabitants at any time of the day. As we read in the justification, “Nowy Targ” is an example of elegant, metropolitan architecture, adapted to the style of the surrounding space. It is an example of exemplary solutions (including pedestrian routes around the facility with even, non-slip paving, low- or no-threshold entrances, access card readers and intercom at a low height), which allow users with special needs to take full advantage of all the services in the facility”.
